Donald J. Cayea represents both insurance and corporate clients in significant matters of litigation. He has served as trial counsel in arbitration and litigation arising out of many types of commercial disputes, ranging from insurance and bond claims, entertainment, employment issues, and civil rights. His practice is national, and he has appeared in tribunals in London, as well, to advise Lloyd’s insurers on issues of American law.
Mr. Cayea has tried over 100 cases, some of which have resulted in over 25 reported decisions. He has litigated a number of high profile cases, such as Mingus v. Dell Publications involving a libel claim by the son of the late jazz great, Charles Mingus; Bailey v. The Cambridge Diet, involving a copyright infringement and unfair competition claim against the creators of the leading fad diet in the 1980’s; Lloyds v. Don King, where he represented the lead syndicate at Lloyd’s that sued boxing promoter Don King to recover losses involving Mike Tyson and Jose Chavez; SEC v. Berger, where he defended the founder of Manhattan Capital in a landmark case involving the SEC’s jurisdiction over off shore hedge funds, Comfort v. Once Upon a Time Films, in which he defended the filmmakers against a claim false light and libel; and as co-counsel in a lawsuit involving the wrongful issuance of a building permit, which was featured as a full page article in the New York Times.
In addition to his legal practice, Mr. Cayea is an accomplished author and speaker. His articles have appeared in the Litigation Section of The New York Law Journal, The Entertainment Law Reporter, and at the International Risk Management Institute, Inc. He has been a featured speaker for the Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS), Property Loss Research Bureau, the Council on Education and Management, Business and Law Reports, and the Nassau Suffolk Claims Managers Council. He also conducts employment law continuing education and CLE programs sponsored by insurance companies, as well as leading education companies. Mr. Cayea taught at the New York University Institute for Paralegal Studies and has lectured several times at the Council on Education and Management, Workers’ Compensation and Employment Law Update.
Mr. Cayea has been recognized in Marquis Who’s Who in American Law, Who's Who in America, Who’s Who in the East, and as a New York Super Lawyer. Articles featuring prominent cases he has litigated have been published or featured in Time Magazine, The New York Law Journal, The Entertainment Law Reporter, The United States Patent Quarterly, The New York Post, USA Today, the New York Times, and Newsday.
Mr. Cayea earned his B.A. at Long Island University and his J.D. at the Western New England School of Law. He is a member of the American Bar Association, New York State Bar Association, Bar of the City of New York, and the Nassau County Bar Association. He is admitted to practice in the State of New York, the District of Columbia, U.S. Court of Appeals 2 nd Circuit, U.S. District Court for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, U.S. Court of Federal Claims, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
