Emery K. Harlan, Partner and Employment Group Co-Chair, received a B.A. in Business Administration from Siena Heights College and a J.D. from the University of Wisconsin Law School, where he was a Ray & Ethel Brown Fellow. Immediately following law school, Mr. Harlan served as a law clerk for the Honorable George Edwards (dec.) of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Mr. Harlan has been named a Wisconsin Super Lawyer for the past four years.
Mr. Harlan is an experienced litigator and represents companies in all facets of equal opportunities and employment law. Throughout his career, he has litigated age, sex, race, handicap, and religion claims under Title VII and state law, common law tort claims such as assault, defamation, and intentional infliction of emotional distress, and wage complaints under the Fair Labor Standards Act. He has also coordinated the defense for multi-party litigation on behalf of major corporations.
Mr. Harlan is the Co-Founder and current Board Chair of the National Association of Minority and Women Owned Law Firms (NAMWOLF), a national association dedicated to increasing the usage of minority and women-owned law firms by U.S. corporations. Not only is he active within the legal community, Mr. Harlan serves the public as a Board Member of Milwaukee Health Services and the Urban Day School, Milwaukee. He is also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
He is admitted to practice in Wisconsin; Illinois; U.S. Court of Appeals, Sixth Circuit; U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois; and the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Wisconsin.
