Darin L. McCollum

Biography

Darin L. McCollum is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and is actively engaged in the preparation, prosecution, and enforcement of U.S. and international patents relating to biomedical, mechanical, and electromechanical technologies. These wide-ranging technologies include such diverse products as: medical devices, implants, biosensors, micro-fluidics, baby care and nursing products, recreational products, pest control devices, absorbent products, electric motors, and industrial energy systems.

Working closely with inventors, in-house counsel, and patent examiners, Mr. McCollum assists clients through the various phases of product design and development to ensure suitable patent protection and strategic consistency. He provides advice on patentability, validity, and patent infringement issues, including preparing non-infringement and invalidity opinions, and patentability, due diligence, and patent landscape analyses. He has conducted prior art searches and prepared state-of-the-art reports and clearance opinions. In addition, Mr. McCollum has assisted with Inter Partes Review proceedings, including providing petition and prior art analysis, conducting legal research on procedural and legal questions, and drafting patent owner responses and expert declarations.

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. McCollum practiced as a patent attorney for a large law firm; served as the Director of Engineering & Manufacturing of Tayman Medical, Inc. prior to its acquisition by CMS, Inc. (now an Elekta company) where he directed research and design, including new product research; product design; prototype development and testing; development of manufacturing procedures; and materials selection for innovative cancer treatment devices focused on prostate cancer brachytherapy.

Mr. McCollum received a J.D., cum laude, at Washburn University School of Law, where he was a staff member of the Washburn Law Journal. He attended Kansas State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Mr. McCollum gained experience as a judicial intern to the Honorable Julie A. Robinson in the United States District Court for the District of Kansas.

He is a member of the Missouri, Kansas, Wichita, and American Bar Associations, American Intellectual Property Law Association, and a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. Mr. McCollum is admitted to practice in the States of Kansas and Missouri, the U.S. District Courts for the District of Kansas and the Western District of Missouri, and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
