Jennifer A. Sunderland focuses her practice on a broad range of criminal and civil litigation and has experience as trial counsel in criminal and civil jury trials in state court in Massachusetts. Her practice focuses on criminal defense and civil litigation, which includes professional malpractice, negligence, premises liability, and products liability actions. She also handles insurance coverage disputes and litigation arising out of real estate and contract disputes. Ms. Sunderland has appellate experience and litigated a successful appeal before the Supreme Judicial Court regarding the retroactivity of a law pertaining to drug-free school zone in Commonwealth v. Pagan, 466 Mass. 1026 (2013).
Representative clients include Fortune 500 and Fortune 100 Corporations, including national retailers, insurance companies, insurance brokerage firms, law firms, large corporations, closely-held corporations, and small businesses. She also has experience representing individual clients charged with criminal offenses and in probate and family court actions, including estate litigation.
Ms. Sunderland’s recent representations include: defending a national retailer against a multi-million dollar negligence and products liability lawsuit against multi-state Plaintiffs; representing a personal representative in a complex estate litigation involving millions of dollars in creditor claims and lawsuits; and defending individuals in state court charged with felony property and narcotics offenses.
Prior to entering private practice, Ms. Sunderland gained trial experience as a Staff Attorney for four years with the Committee for Public Counsel Services, the agency responsible for public defense in Massachusetts. She also served as a law clerk for the Honorable Robert J. Cordy of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court and to the Justices of the Massachusetts Superior Court. She is also an Adjunct Professor at New England Law | Boston, teaching an upper level course in criminal law.
Ms. Sunderland is Co-Chair of the Governing Board (2014-2016) of the Supreme Judicial Court Law Clerk’s Society. She is a member of the Women’s Bar Association, Massachusetts Bar Association, and Boston Bar Association. She is also a member of the Massachusetts Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
Ms. Sunderland earned her Juris Doctor, cum laude, from the New England School of Law, where she was the Editor-in-Chief for the New England Law Review. She earned a B.A. in Political Science, magna cum laude, from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She is admitted to practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts.
