Biography
Anique N. Ruiz practices in the areas of litigation and eDiscovery and is a member of the Restaurant & Hospitality Law team. Her litigation experience includes insurance defense, premises and general liability, worker’s compensation, personal injury claims, tort and breach of contract matters, structured settlements, and products and food liability. Ms. Ruiz has represented clients in a variety of industries, including insurers, restaurants, retail, communications, food manufacturers, banking, non-profits, and educational institutions.
Ms. Ruiz assisted in the successful representation of a Fortune 500 Industrial Automation Control Company in an eight figure commercial lawsuit. The suit included compliance with eDiscovery obligations. Ms. Ruiz communicated with appropriate client personnel regarding pertinent document retention and destruction policies, information concerning the structure of electronic information systems, and the execution of search for and production of relevant materials in the lawsuit.
As a yearlong intern with the Wisconsin State Public Defenders Office – Milwaukee Trial Division, she defended clients and cross-examined police officers in Milwaukee County Circuit Court under the Student Practice Rule. During Ms. Ruiz’s tenure at the Public Defenders’ Office, she was successful in obtaining a Motion to Suppress Evidence in a Carrying a Concealed Weapon (CCW) case. Ms. Ruiz gained experience as a summer associate for a large Milwaukee law firm, as a lobbyist in Washington, D.C. with the Council on Educational Opportunity and the United States Student Association, and as an intern for Senator Russ Feingold in his Milwaukee office.
Ms. Ruiz is a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin and was elected in 2012 as District Two Representative on the Wisconsin State Bar Board of Governors. She was also honored by CCN Magazine as a “Rising Star” at the 2012 Midwest Urban Empowerment Awards, which honors young professionals under 40 who are making their mark on their communities.
Her professional associations include Legal Action of Wisconsin (Board Member), Wisconsin Association of African-American Lawyers (Board Member and Co-Chair of 2012 Corporate Sponsorship Committee), Wisconsin Hispanic Lawyers Association (Treasurer and Liaison to the Hispanic National Bar Association), National Bar Association (Delegate – 2011 NBA Annual and 2012 NBA Mid-Year Conventions), Hispanic National Bar Association, American Bar Association, Association of Women Lawyers, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated - Milwaukee Alumnae Chapter. Ms. Ruiz is also a member of the James Beard Foundation.
Ms. Ruiz earned her J.D. from Marquette University Law School, where she was a Board member of the Moot Court Association, Vice President of the Black Law Students Association, and was a member of the Judicial Committee. She received a Master of Arts in Political Science, cum laude, from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs and Political Science at Marquette University. Ms. Ruiz is admitted to practice in the State of Wisconsin and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern and Western Districts of Wisconsin. She is proficient in Spanish.
