Biography

James J. Barta, Jr. is a registered U.S. patent attorney and has provided IP counseling through the various stages of product design and development for numerous organizations including Fortune 500 corporations. This includes providing patentability and patent landscape analyses.

Working in the computer technology industry, Mr. Barta guides in-house counsel and inventors during the preparation and prosecution of U.S. and foreign patent applications. His experience includes a wide array of technology, involving software, operating systems, networking, and hardware. More specifically, he has worked with inventors on mobile device software and hardware, gaming, image processing, process controls, computer resource management, biomedical devices, and advanced research topics.

Before joining Gonzalez Saggio & Harlan, Mr. Barta ran a successful solo practice for several years. Prior to that, he worked in St. Louis as a partner at Armstrong Teasdale LLP and as an associate at Senniger Powers, a prominent intellectual property firm. Before becoming an attorney, he was a software engineer at The Boeing Company, where he was recognized for outstanding performance in his work on software for aircraft avionics systems and computer-based flight simulation.

Mr. Barta earned his J.D. at the Saint Louis University School of Law, where he was the Associate Editor of the Saint Louis University Public Law Review. At Washington University in St. Louis, he earned an M.S. degree in Computer Science; a Graduate Certificate in Networking and Telecommunications; and B.S. degrees in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, and Electrical Engineering. He is admitted to practice in Missouri and Texas, and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
