Biography
David S. Kim is a registered U.S. patent attorney who works closely with his clients through various phases of product design and development to ensure strategic intellectual property protection of their products and services.
Mr. Kim guides inventors and in-house counsel during the preparation and prosecution of U.S. and foreign patent applications and analyzes invention disclosures, prototypes, and commercially-available products to render attorney assessments and opinions on patentability, trademark selection, freedom-to-operate, and infringement issues. He practices in a broad range of technologies including computer-based inventions, communication systems, aerospace components, automotive components, product packaging, green technology, and medical devices.
He has written and presented on a variety of topics ranging from an introduction to intellectual property to understanding the inner workings of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and is an Adjunct Professor at Southwestern Illinois College, where he teaches an upper-level Intellectual Property Law course. Most recently, Mr. Kim moderated “Practical Considerations for a Corporate IP Department” at the Minority In-House Counsel Association Conference (2015).
Mr. Kim was appointed as a 2015 Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) Fellow, which identifies high-potential attorneys from diverse backgrounds and provides a path to leadership. LCLD is an organization of more than 220 corporate chief legal officers and attorneys who have dedicated themselves to creating a truly diverse U.S. legal profession.
Mr. Kim is actively involved in the Regional Business Council’s Young Professionals Network (YPN) and the Missouri Asian American Bar Association, and he recently served as the Central Regional Governor for the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) and a Host Committee Co-Chair for the 2013 NAPABA National Convention in Kansas City. He was honored with the St. Louis Business Journal “30 Under 30″ award, which recognizes top young community newsmakers, and was selected for inclusion in the Regional Business Counsel’s YPN Leadership 100, which recognizes 100 rising professionals out of 2,600 group members.
Prior to joining Gonzalez Saggio & Harlan, Mr. Kim practiced at an AmLaw 200 law firm and worked at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) as a patent examiner in the Electronic Commerce Art Unit and as an intellectual property research specialist in the Office of Enforcement.
Mr. Kim earned his J.D. at The George Washington University Law School and a B.S. in Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He is admitted to practice in Missouri and Virginia and is a registered patent attorney with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
