Douglas O. Guffey

Biography

With more than three decades of legal experience, Douglas Guffey serves as attorney, counselor, and advisor for those in the business of health care and life sciences.

Mr. Guffey’s reputation in the legal community has earned him Martindale-Hubbell’s prestigious “AV-Preeminent” rating, signifying that his peers have ranked him as possessing the very highest level of professional excellence and ethical standards.

After graduating from the MBA/JD Joint Program at Harvard University, Mr. Guffey served as a senior contract law advisor in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps. Following this service, for which he earned a U.S. Army Meritorious Service Medal, he rose from associate to equity partner in the business law group of a large law firm, representing commercial banks and Fortune 500 Corporations in a wide range of transactional matters. Following that, he served for 12 years as the Executive Director of a management services organization supporting medical groups and physician-owned treatment centers. Prior to joining Gonzalez Saggio & Harlan, Mr. Guffey founded Guffey & Associates, P.C. with the goal of providing comprehensive legal representation, advice, and counsel to those in the health care industry. Mr. Guffey serves as General Counsel to the Arizona Oncology Foundation.

Mr. Guffey’s practice is focused in the areas of complex business transactions, including healthcare mergers and acquisitions, hospital-physician joint ventures, project finance, venture finance, equipment and receivables finance, and real estate acquisition, development, and finance; complex dispute resolution, including mediation, arbitration, and litigation management; healthcare law and regulation; group
medical practice organization and development; and transactions with healthcare management service organizations.

Outside of his legal practice, Mr. Guffey has served as an adjunct professor at the University of Puget Sound Graduate School of Business (1979-1982), where he developed and taught courses in business law, financial accounting, and managerial accounting. He has also served on the Board of Directors (1990-1997) and as Board President (1993-1994) of Phoenix Day Child Development Center, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to providing day care and developmental services to at-risk children in south Phoenix.

Mr. Guffey earned his J.D. and M.B.A. at Harvard University and received a B.S., summa cum laude, from Arizona State University. He is admitted to practice in the State of Arizona and before the Federal District Court in the State of Arizona. Mr. Guffey has been listed in the Bar Registers of Preeminent Attorneys in the Area of Health Law each year since 2008. He is a member of the Arizona Bar Association, American Health Lawyers’ Association, American Bar Association (Health Law Section), and Harvard Business School Health Industry Alumni Association. Mr. Guffey is a former Advisory Board Member (2008-2010) of the Point Financial Venture Leasing Fund.
