Biography
Jay Blumenkopf is an experienced litigator and trial attorney. He has had more than 35 years experience in the defense of all types of employment cases, including class actions. Mr. Blumenkopf “cut his employment teeth” on the case of Sobel v. Yeshiva University, a class action sex discrimination matter, in which the EEOC intervened on the grounds it was a case of national importance.
Mr. Blumenkopf represents insurance companies and self insurers in life, health, and disability benefits matters throughout the United States. Where the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974, 29 U.S.C. Section 1001, et seq. (ERISA) does not govern, he represents insurers in breach of contract and bad faith matters. He also represents insurers in suits by individual providers and by institutional providers under hospital services contracts.
Mr. Blumenkopf is a frequent lecturer and is involved in many professional activities. He has served on the Advisory Board of the Bureau of National Affairs, Inc., Civil Trial Manual and has been a member of the faculty of New York Law School, the National Institute for Trial Advocacy and the Hofstra Law School Trial Techniques Program. He has authored numerous articles in legal publications. His background includes practicing at large law firms, including Proskauer Rose.
Mr. Blumenkopf is a member of the Employment Law and the Life, Health and Disability Law Committees of the Defense Research Institute (DRI). He is a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, an invitation-only trial lawyer honorary society consisting of less than one-half of one percent of American lawyers.
In addition, Mr. Blumenkopf is active in civic and charitable organizations and is Chairman of the Board of Directors for One Heart World-Wide, an infant and maternal health charity founded at the request of the Dalai Lama. In 2013, he was selected as a recipient of the Litigation Counsel of America’s inaugural Peter Perlman Service Awards, which recognizes those who have contributed in meaningful ways to society by giving their time and resources in an effort to improve the lives of others.
Mr. Blumenkopf earned his J.D., cum laude, from Vermont Law School, an LL.M. at New York University, and his B.A. at the University of Vermont. He is admitted to practice in Florida; New York; the U.S. District Courts for the Southern and Middle Districts of Florida; Southern District of New York; and the Middle District of Maine; U.S. Court of Appeals Second and Eleventh Circuits; and the U.S. Supreme Court.
