Biography
Jack Schaedel, partner in Gonzalez Saggio & Harlan’s Labor & Employment Practice Group, has devoted his nineteen-year career to litigation of labor and employment law matters and advising employers in managing their workforce and complying with federal and California employment law.
Representing and counseling employers with as few as two employees and as many as 30,000, based in Pasadena, around Southern California, and throughout the United States, he helps employers understand the nuances and finer points of discrimination and harassment law, wage and hour rules and regulations, leave law based on medical, family or disability reasons, handbook development and enforcement, and the panoply of issues that may face a client on any given day.
Mr. Schaedel’s experience includes a favorable verdict on behalf of an individual sexual harassment defendant owed a duty of indemnification, and a million-dollar reverse fee award in favor of a client wrongly accused of sexual harassment by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. He has also assisted clients facing multi-million dollar wage claims and other high-stakes employment litigation, but gets great satisfaction from helping clients develop systems to address and resolve issues before they get anywhere near that level.
Mr. Schaedel’s experience in labor law has involved representation campaigns and elections, collective bargaining negotiations, unfair labor practice arbitrations, and day-to-day CBA administration questions.
During his first nine years of practice, he worked for employment law boutique Ballard Rosenberg Golper & Savitt, LLP, Loeb & Loeb, and Parker Milliken Clark O’Hara & Samuelian. Mr. Schaedel founded Schaedel & Associates, a Professional Law Corporation in 2004, operating it through 2009, when he joined forces with The Hernandez Law Group to create Hernandez Schaedel & Associates (“HS&A”). HS&A merged with Gonzalez Saggio & Harlan in 2013.
Mr. Schaedel is the founder and Chairman of the Labor and Employment Law Section of the Pasadena Bar Association, and serves on the Executive Committee of the Labor and Employment Law section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association. He is a former Vice President of the Board of Directors of the La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce and is past President of the La Cañada Flintridge Educational Foundation, which raises over $2,000,000.00 annually to support class size reduction and special programs in the La Cañada Unified School District. Mr. Schaedel is a regular participant in Goldman Sachs’ Ten Thousand Small Businesses seminars, where he educated and counsels entrepreneurs on various aspects of employment law.
He is passionate about youth sports, having held leadership roles with F.C. Golden State, a youth soccer club based in Pasadena, the La Cañada Junior Baseball and Softball Association, and AYSO Region 13. Mr. Schaedel enjoys history, politics, travel, chess, sports, and foreign languages. He is married to a San Marino High School English teacher, and they have three children aged 7, 14, and 17 as well as a happy four-year old Jack Russell wirehaired terrier.
Mr. Schaedel received his J.D. from UCLA School of Law and a B.S. from Cornell University, School of Industrial & Labor Relations. He also is a trained and skilled mediator, having earned a certificate from the world-renowned Straus Institute at Pepperdine University. He is admitted to practice in the State of California; United States District Court, Central District of California; and United States Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit.
In December of 2013, Mr. Schaedel was named “Business Attorney of the Year” by the Los Angeles Metropolitan Hispanic Chambers of Commerce for his work with the Hispanic and Latino business community throughout Los Angeles.
