Neil P. Calvin is a registered patent attorney specializing in the area of patent/intellectual property licensing. Prior to joining Gonzalez Saggio & Harlan, Mr. Calvin worked for Microsoft Corporation for nearly nine years and was Associate General Counsel and Director of Patent Licensing. In addition to a diverse patent/intellectual property practice at Microsoft supporting patent/IP issues for Windows, he formed and led Microsoft’s Patent Licensing Team and specialized in IP issues in the areas of standards, open source software, outbound patent licenses, cross licenses, OEM software licensing, and joint development deals.
Mr. Calvin’s experience also includes six years as an attorney with Leydig, Voit & Mayer in Chicago, focusing on patent litigation and opinion work. Prior to that, he gained experience as an Engineer with AT&T Technologies in Columbus, working on factory automation systems and JIT manufacturing.
He has been a featured ABA speaker on patent litigation
issues and a guest lecturer on Open Source issues
at the University of Washington School of Law. Mr.
Calvin earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering
from Case Western Reserve University, with High Honors,
and he earned a Juris Doctorate from The Ohio State
University College of Law.
He is a member of the Washington and Illinois State
Bar Associations and is admitted to practice in Washington
and Illinois, the U.S. District Court Northern District
of Illinois, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the
Federal Circuit. He is also registered to practice
